How to Keep Your Sleeping Baby Safe

Posted

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, every year around 3,500 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly while they are sleeping. Research tells us that a safe sleep environment can help reduce your babie’s risk. This is known as the ABC’s of Safe Sleep.

Alone - Baby sleeps alone in their own space. Never let them sleep in your bed, or sofa, or recliner.
Back - Always place your baby on their back for all naps and at night. Back sleeping keeps their airway open.
Crib - Use a safe crib, bassinet, or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a tightly fitted sheet.
Don’t Smoke - Keep the air around your baby clean. Do not smoke, vape or use drugs or alcohol near the baby. Keep smoke residue off your clothes.
Empty Bed - Keep the crib totally empty. No pillows, loose blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, or weighted sleep sacks. Dress your baby in a simple one-piece sleeper or wearable blanket instead. If your baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller, swing or infant carrier, you should remove them to a firm sleep surface on their back as soon as possible.

Learning about safe sleep for babies is important for all caregivers, including all family members, baby sitters, and child care providers.

Remember to talk with your health care provider if you have any questions or concerns about the safety of your baby’s sleep environment.
