Greensboro council meeting ZOOM feed hacked

GREENSBORO – An unknown person hacked into the Greensboro town council meeting ZOOM feed Monday, Feb. 10, with pornographic and offensive material.

Two staff members scrambled to shut down the feed, and the council was able to resume the meeting.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Mayor David Spencer and the town council posted a statement on Facebook, “The incident involved transmitting obscene and vulgar content that not only interfered with the meeting’s proceedings but also caused significant disturbance and embarrassment to those in attendance.”

“This repulsive and reprehensible conduct is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” according to the statement.

In a Feb. 12 interview, Town Manager Tammy Kelledes said the content of the material was hard-core porn and included frequent use of the N-word. About half a dozen people were watching the meeting via ZOOM, she said.

“We were certainly disappointed and shocked with the interruption and want to apologize to anyone who may have witnessed the incident on Zoom,” Mayor David Spencer wrote in a Feb. 12 text message. “A criminal investigation is underway and we will vigorously pursue charges if the person(s) responsible are identified.”

According to the posted statement, Spencer and the council “are committed to ensuring that this situation is thoroughly examined by federal, state and local authorities. There was potential for this contemptable act to be transmitted across state lines and/or witnessed by minors. We will be steadfast in our pursuit of any applicable criminal charges.”

Spencer asked that anyone “with any information that may help identify those responsible” reach out to the Greensboro Police Department, who is investigating the incident.
