DENTON – While many voters had streamed into the Denton Firehouse when the polls opened, the most memorable for election judge Carol Downs was a 91-year-old first-time voter.
But that senior citizen was one of a “large number of first-time voters,” she said.
The day dawned with a thick fog that blanketed the area and cleared by 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for the Presidential Election. When afternoon winds died down, temperatures were still in the upper 60s by the time the polls closed.
By 6:27 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1,450 voters had cast their ballots in Denton, chief election judge Stacy Gardner said.
Caroline County has nearly 22,000 persons eligible to vote, election program assistant Debbie Brohawn said from her desk at the Caroline County Board of Elections on the second floor of the Health and Public Services Building.
Of that population, 5,635, or about 25% had voted. By 4 p.m. on Election Day just shy of 6,000 had voted at all of the county polling places. Voters dropping their paper ballots in the ballot box outside of the HAPS Building.
The early voting results canvass took place at 2 p.m. Election officials started the day at 5:45 p.m. and planned to stay until all the day’s ballots were counted, most likely late into the night.
In the predominantly blue state, a strong majority of Caroline County voters voted for Republican candidates According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, the unofficial results, last updated at 10:09 p.m. Nov. 5, with all eight precincts reporting, are as follows:
President and Vice President:
Donald Trump and J.D. Vance 10,320 or 70.1%
Kamala Harris and Tim Walz 4,026 or 27.4%
U.S. Senator:
Larry Hogan 10,669 or 73.4%
Angela Alsobrooks 3,120 or 21.5%
District 1 Representative in Congress:
Andy Harris 10,330 or 71.8%
Blane Miller III 3,603 or 25.0%
The following candidates did not declare a party affiliation:
For continuing in office as judges of the Appellate Court of Maryland At Large, Anne Albright, Kevin Arthur and Andrea Leahy won overwhelmingly.
Judge Stephen H. Kehoe won 80.5% of the ballots in his bid to continue as judge of the Appellate Court of Maryland.
For seats on the Board of Education, Chrissy Bartz of District 1 and Stefanie Johnson of District 2 each won 98% of the votes.
Incumbent Lester Branson retained his seat on the Denton Town Council, getting 205 votes over challenger Angel Perez Otero’s 149 votes.
On the Question 1 Constitutional Amendment called “Declaration of Rights - Right to Reproductive Freedom,” 8,180 voted for the amendment, while 5,902 voted against it. Statewide, the amendment was passed by 74% of the electorate.
The first post-election mail-in ballot canvass will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 7. The provisional ballot canvass will be held 10 a.m. Nov. 13, and the second post-election mail-in ballot canvass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 15.
