DENTON – About 30 military veterans and their guests attended the annual Veterans Day Heroes Breakfast hosted by CASA of Caroline County Friday, Nov. 8, at the Denton Diner.
CASA of Caroline Executive Director Amy Horne welcomed the veterans and applauded their service. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Caroline County is dedicated to the recruitment and training of advocates appointed by the court to serve abused or neglected children within the legal system.
Sponsoring the free breakfast with CASA of Caroline County were Shore United Bank and Aging At Home Solutions.
The guest speaker was Federalsburg native and Navy veteran Brian Carmean, a local veterans’ employment representative and disabled veterans’ outreach program specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor.
Carmean provides career services to veterans and other eligible Maryland residents. He partners with local employers to connect veterans with job and training opportunities. Born and raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, he now lives in Caroline County with his family.
“By providing dedicated services and resources, we can ensure that those who have served our country have the tools and opportunities that they need to succeed in civilian life,” Carmean said. “It is through programs like these that we honor our veterans not just with words, but with tangible support and confidence to help fulfill prosperous and fulfilling futures.”
A good-natured gesture was offered by Army veteran Jim Baker, who
served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
“Last year we did a cake-cutting ceremony,” Marine veteran and Denton Town Councilman Keith Johnson said. “This year we're not gonna have a regular cake-cutting ceremony, but Mr. Baker didn't want the Marines to feel empty-handed today.”
Baker thanked U.S. Marines for their “brave service in all areas … particularly in the first corps of Vietnam, where the Marines dominated everybody.” The birthday cake, decorated with icing crayons read, “Happee 249 th BirfDay Mareens.”
