William "Bill" Harold Scudder, Sr, 80, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, September 7, 2026. He was born on November 1, 1945, to the late Percy Miller Scudder and Carol Evans Scudder in Morristown, New Jersey.
Bill graduated from North Caroline High School in 1964 and proudly joined the United States Navy in January of 1965 and had distinguished 20-year career retiring in 1985 as a Senior Chief Radioman. He dedicated his time and energy serving as the Commander of the former VFW Post 7937 in Greensboro for many years, was active in the American Legion and a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Tin Can Sailors. As well as his dedication to veterans' organizations he was a 70-year member and former president of the Caroline County Bird Club, a 70-year member of the Maryland Ornithological Society and an avid bird watcher. The town bird of Denton, an Eastern Blue bird, is named "Scuddy" in his honor.
Bill always had a smile on his face, and his quick wit and wicked sense of humor brightened the world of those who knew and loved him. He loved being with his family and friends, yearly vacations to Aiken, SC and attending conventions with his brother. He had a sweet tooth and was delighted to be spoiled with his family and friends, making him his favorite treats often. He enjoyed watching college softball, golf, and basketball. He was a self-proclaimed wordsmith who loved playing scrabble and doing crossword puzzles. He loved music, particularly from the 50's/60's and Elvis and liked to tease that his brain was "80% song lyrics." Bill could almost always be seen wearing one of his favorite flannel shirts and had a vast collection. His grandchildren called him Grandpop Cookies because he was an excellent baker and loved to bake them their favorites.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 41 wonderful years, Julia Walker Scudder; 6 children, Sophia Thomas (Gary) of Mountain Top, PA, Marie Scudder of Greensboro, William Scudder, Jr of Seaford, James Scudder (Susan) of Federalsburg, Elizabeth Langley (Aaron) of Federalsburg, Robert Scudder (Ruth) of Nicholson, PA; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; 6 siblings Peggy Bowden of Salisbury, Jean Zimmerman of Ohio, Sue Dunn (Buddy) of Harmony, Edna (Robert) Hanley of Greenwood, John Scudder of Federalsburg, Joan Powell of Federalsburg; a special niece "Penelope"; many nieces and nephews and his beloved grand dog Charlie Dino.
