The Caroline County Courthouse Clock Tower – which has cast its shadow over the county seat for over 100 years – has undergone numerous renovation and restoration projects since its construction. The original bell can be seen in these photos taken by Mickey Pullen in November of 2023, just as conversations began turning about the next phase of necessary maintenance to the rotting wood interior and fading tile exterior.

In September of 2025, the plan to once again rescue the clock tower from the effects of time came to fruition. Scaffolding encased the timepiece for several months while laborers from Tecta America East LLC of Fruitland completed the almost $250,000 worth of repairs. It has been said that the tolls of the clock tower’s bell could be heard for miles around each hour on the hour – though the landscape surrounding the historic focal point has certainly changed over the decades.

The clock tower once again stands proudly over Downtown Denton in January 2026, now with a more stable and vibrant charm. Though county leaders in generations past decided against modernizing the design of the tower, the clock itself was transitioned to an electric version from the original – and cumbersome – mechanical system in 1946.

Even months after the repairs, the infrastructure inside of the clock tower still gleams with newness. Pictured are the fresh wood beams and revitalized clock faces from within the cupola, accessed through a series of ladders. The clock tower has survived so much since its construction in the spring of 1914. May it continue to be a reminder of the passage of time, the importance of tradition, and the resilience of Caroline County.
